We were in the midst of the beautiful 2021 harvest when the idea to make just one barrel of Rosé for friends and family came to mind. A joyous idea that will provide a season full of enjoyment through the summer and its al fresco meals. We did retire the name Wild Hare in homage to those early vintages and have simply and precisely named the wine – Rosé. It is 100% Cabernet Franc.
The source of the wine is the spectacular Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard, located in the cool southwestern corner of the Napa Valley. We have been making Cabernet Franc from this vineyard since 2007. Being planted the Entav 214 Clone, with its Loire Valley origins, this vineyard makes wines that precisely reflect the variety. One single barrel of this wine was made, which produced 30 cases.
This in no bashful Rosé but an expressive and intriguing presentation, starting with the fresh fruity aromas with distinct berry scents and mingling fresh garden herbs. On the palate, this is a full mouth of fruits, with a dominant fresh strawberry compote element that carries into a savory and lengthy feel on the palate. Fresh fruit acidity keeps the finish bright and fresh. This wine makes for a solid summer sipper and is robust and complex enough to shine brightly with an array of summer and fall meals.
